The John Dobbs Experiment
Pray for John. He has agreed to have his head surgically removed for scientific purposes. Rather, we should pray more for his wife. It is going to be a challenge for her to lug her husband’s head around so that he can keep his ministerial appointments.
Seriously, John called me today to talk about my last post, Consumer Christians. We may not be the brightest bulbs in the room but together we manage to produce a few watts of bright ideas. This is one of those ideas.
John is going to come up with a list of four or five people from the church he preaches for. At some point, this week or next week, they will meet over dinner or coffee. Instead of harping from the pulpit on our need to be counter cultural revolutionaries he is going to appeal ,face to face, for these few brothers and sisters to join his experiment. His mission. He is going to ask them to help him turn the tide - to create a congregation of gimme, gimme’s to one where the prevelant mood is, “What can I do today for a specific brother or sister.
The five participants will be charged with the mission of hitting the church doors on a chosen Sunday with the intention of purposefully saying something positive and encouraging to the one they have chosen. It can be something as simple as, “Hey, I’m glad we go to church together. I like you. You make me excited to be here every time we meet for services.”
At some point after Sunday the group will meet again to talk about their experience and what it did. They will do this for four Sundays in a row choosing new people every week while reaffirming to the others they have encouraged that they are still thrilled to get to worship with them week after week.
Meanwhile, John can keep those of us who are interested in the results informed via his blog. The goal is simple. It is a token of our resistance to the cultural drift of meism. It is our way of fighting back. Rebelling. It is our way of preparing our people for works of service. It is our way of demonstrating to God that we do not believe the worship experience should be defined as meaningful only when we get our way. It is our way of equipping rebels to hit the church doors heaven-bent on being an active blessing in someone’s life. It is our way of being crucified. It is our way of singing Jesus first, yourself last and others in between. That is where true kingdom J.O.Y. is found. It is our way of shifting the greedy spotlight off of ourselves and directing that light on someone else. It is our defiant battle-cry that we seek, above all else, to walk in the steps of Jesus. It is our way of saying sermons, songs and formats do not for us make worship. We say, boring sermon, uninspired music and the same old format - Who cares? As long as we get to serve somebody else we will be just fine thank you very much.
I can’t wait to see what happens in Mississippi. I want John and his group to know that Craig and Amy will be with them every step of the way. The two of us vow to do at Memorial Drive, in Tulsa, what you will be doing there. It’s going to be exciting to compare notes.
John, did I get all that down right? And please, keep your head - attached.
love ya,
craig

The prayer girls are meeting at my house next Tuesday. I will present the experiment to them.
That’s really cool. Let us know how it goes. - craig
I love it. I’m going to do this with my house church. But if it doesn’t go well, I’m going to throw John under the bus.
Better be a big bus.
My wife and I have been talking about this a lot lately, so count me in. We will present it to our small group and set the ball in motion. Great idea, John and Craig!
WOW! That is a idea worth spreading! I will have to go to John’s blog! Our connection group meets this Sunday night and our topic is about not being complacent in the church. We are reading a bible study called Cure for the Common Life by Max Lucado. So it sounds like this experiment will fit right in with what we are trying to accomplish in our small group for the big church gathering! Matter fact I typically don’t sleep well so I do my readings(blogs, bible studies etc) at 2 am, 3 am or 4 am and well it is 2 am here. I am off to read! Thanks John and Craig!
Pretty cool idea. I’m not sure I can find 4 or 5 people who can say something nice (just kidding). This sounds like a neat plan.
Are you sure you two guys came up with this all by yourselves? No outside help?
I’m in… let me see who I can get to participate. I’d love to compare notes too. Besides, I like John and don’t want to see him thrown under a bus or any where else.
PS - A headless John Dobbs? That’s kind of gross. I’m thinking we need to maybe make your blog a rated PG-13 blog.
I’m in too, Craig. I resolve to spread the love of Jesus to at least four people at church this Sunday. Great idea, John and Craig!!
I am going to just start doing this. I actually do this a lot at work with a couple of people. The results have been that I see them smile more.
so now do we have a Tulsa group?
Billye
Yes, it look like a Tulsa group is forming. Yee Haw!
Ya know, I’m not sure how this came to be called the “John Dobbs Experiment”. LOL … This has Craig Hicks written all over it. Aside from names … it’s going to be fun … and I will call attention to it on my blog soon … just had some other stuff to get out of my system today. Love and Grace to you, Craig.
Craig…it’s exciting to hear about this “experiment”…helping folks become not just a church of Christ - but a church like Christ has been what we have been trying to do in Lubbock for the last three years…when I read the post…I thought…that’s my family in Lubbock…the little “open” church…full of broken rejects (by some standards). If you want to see a real live group of folks practicing what you are talking about…come to Lubbock and visit our bunch. (I’m in Cozumel - so I can boast about them - because once I left - their status improved). These folks welcome broken sinners and give them an opportunity to breathe out so that they can breathe in…there have been folk restored…and many added to the kingdom. TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY!!! Craig…you need to come to Lubbock for a visit for a few days - come on Wednesday and leave after Sunday….You will be blessed!
I like the thought of getting folks together - willing to approach “church” not as worship performance but as a fellowsip opportunity - to “bind up the brokenhearted”. For an example of just such an experiment - read “In His Steps, by Charles Sheldon. The best example of example of such an experiment is Acts 2:42-47. If we ever get “into” that approach: devoting ourselves to the Word - loving the Church with a “one another” type honor and affection - allowing our words and deeds to “bear fruit” among lost and damned people; then we will see some immeasurable things beyond anything that we can ask or imagine (and that is just the power that is within us). May I make one suggestion: when we get our groups together, let’s not just “commission” our volunteers to “go get them”; let’s prepare each other. Experience the affect and effect of “accept one another” - “honor one another” - “bear one another’s burdens” - “be kind to one another” - “build up one another” - “exhort one another” - etc. I can’t wait to hear the reports of what God is doing through us.
p.s. Let me extend the invitation to our place in Lubbock - not that we make any claim to being a church like Christ - but that is our intention - and since we do not compete against any other church - and the only way you come to our place is because nobody else wants you - we don’t have to worry about “losing” anyone. We can concentrate all of our energies on finding one more broken and bruised man/woman - who needs a place to rest and heal.
Where was Craig today?
Not only do I think this is great for church…but I think it was great for other places too. What do you think would happen if you tried this at work. Do you think the response would be different?
