Housekeeping and Sunday

Housekeeping.  I am so lousy at figuring out how to make all this stuff work.  I’ve left comments on some of your blogs only to lose them because I can’t figure out the google thing.  Al, Trey, Brenda, Shane (Coffman) and others I’ve actually said more than what you got.  They are out there somewhere, I guess.  And I’ve tried to make my name link back, and make links to your blogs. Well,  I’ve failed at the first one and as you can see on my sidebar John Dobbs’ blog is the only one I have for blogs that I read.  But don’t worry John is helping me get everything up and running.  Hey….Wait…He has been helping me and strangely enough his blog is the ONLY blogs that I read.  Hmmm?  Please Be patient with me and think that I don’t care about what you have to say on your blogs.  I do.

One of my heroes has started a blog and I am sure he will have many good things to say.  However, he’s trying to figure out how to make everything work too.  His first (and only, so far) post is very personal.  Revealing.  Transparent.  You should check it out.  http://www.rexboyles.com/blog/.

I was saddened yesterday to hear Randy Moody, former minister for the Garnett church of Christ was killed over the weekend.  His children came home to smell gas in the house.  Apparently Randy was there, but the kids ran next door to call 911.  The house exploded.  I especially think of his brother Darren, who already struggles, with great courage, not to surrender to the bitter things in his life story.  His wife died unexpectedly several years ago.  She was young.  Now this.  i

Sunday.  It was a great day at Memorial.  It was the first day of a new quarter and I get to teach grown-ups!  Acts.  Along with some great co-teachers.  This is the first time I’ve ever taught an Adult Bible Class for an entire quarter.  I hope they like it.  I hope they encounter Jesus in the 28 chapters that lay before us.  We began with a challenge.  Read Acts once a week for the quarter.  I think many of them will accept the challenge.  I can’t wait to see what the Holy Spirit will do with that.

Sermon.  Terry preached on using our talents.  It was great.  He got excited and did a couple of what I call preacher rolls.  And boy was he rolling.  I loved it.

Worship.  Was worshipful.  We are blessed to have Shane Coffman as our Worship minister.  Here’s what I like about Shane.  While some lead worship, Shane just worships.  And, I must say, it is catching.

Finally.  John Dobbs.  He preached on Heroes at his church.  I read about it on his blog.  http://johndobbs.wordpress.com.  You should read it.  Although John intimidates me sometimes with his blogging prowess he’s a great friend.  One who held my hand in the darkness.  He’s also making me gun shy about posting so often but he’s still a great guy.  When he’s not intimidating me.  And if I should disappear, begin the search in the gulf of Mississippi.

Lots of love to my one or two readers.  Okay, one if I don’t include myself.  And to the other, have a great day John.

  1. YOU MADE LINKS! WOO! I think I might do a preacher roll in celebration. What is a preacher roll? You should do a post on that. Use Terry as an example. Does he know you have a blog? This could be fun. I prefer cinnimon rolls to preacher rolls. It’s just a personal thing.

I heard about Randy, sadly … from a friend … and scoured the internet for some news story … found only one that didn’t even name him … too early yet I guess. Did you say that Randy’s wife died years ago? I do not know him except for his Garnett / Workshop connection. I liked him. He had a good book that I even used for a class one quarter here at Central.

Shane is awesome … I agree. Terry also.

I will read Rex’s blog and put it in my Google Reader … I always enjoyed hearing that man preach….but I do not think I have ever met him.

  2. No, not Randy’s wife. Sadly, actually Randy and his wife got a divorce several years ago. It was his brothers wife who died. During a “routine” out-patient surgery. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear.

  3. [...] sermon up on the podcast. I’m not sure if I did any preacher rolls or not. I need Craig to tell me exactly what that is! This afternoon we grilled some chicken breasts, zucchini, squash, [...]

  4. Wow…I was pretty excited there to be mentioned in the first paragraph! I feel pretty special. Hopefully you will figure out the links and then I will be on the side bar too. ha! It doesn’t take much for me to be happy huh?

I too am curious as to what a PREACHER ROLL is. Help me out here Craig. Shane, well, he has a gift from God that enables us to worship the father with him. He’s a blessing.

I heard about your class and I hope you will share more about it each week. Even if you give challanges. I don’t have the opportunity to attend church on Sunday mornings so anything you can throw my way so I can feel a part of your class is appreciated. I will accept the challange of reading Acts for the quarter and see how God uses it in my life.

  5. Craig, I’m not a blogger, but I did want to make some comments on your Acts class. I hope this is an appropriate place to do that.

I was encouraged by the challenge to the class to read through Acts every week. Also by the use of the word exegesis. It holds such wonderful promise to me of a real study of the scriptures and a determination to let God speak. I’m excited that my son, Raphael, will be able to be a part of the class.

(As I write, my husband David is in Haiti teaching exegesis to our new class of preaching students for the first time. I hope it will revolutionize their Bible study, as it has ours and our previous students’.)

Another perspective on Acts that I have found fascinating through the years: Richard Rogers taught us Acts as “Acts of the Holy Spirit”. It was so empowering to see how God’s people met problems and challenges at every turn — then how the Spirit’s power victoriously overcame them. It had such application for me as I looked at the weakness of today’s body (myself included!) and the challenge to spread the gospel to the world. Some week when you’re reading through (I assume the teachers aren’t exempt from the homework) you might try that perspective.

  6. Brenda – you will learn more form reading the book of Acts the 9 or 10 times we will then you could ever learn from me. I had a teacher who used to say, “Read the Bible! It’s amazing what you will learn if you will just read the Bible!” One of the wisest and noblest elders I ever had,Earl Williams, knew the entire N.T. by heart. I know. I tested him. He passed. I asked Him, “How’d you do that?” He told me he just read it over and over. The Bible teacher I learned the most from, who taught me how to see the Bible as real and current and alive and so full of Jesus read his N.T. once a week. So, you may not be able to come to class for awile but I can promise you – if you’ll just read the Bible, Acts in this case, you will pass the exam with flying colors. I love your spirit.

  7. Thank you so much Sarah. Since this is my blog and I can do whatever I want I declare this to be an appropriate place to leave your comments. Plus, they were so nice. Tonight (Mon) the group of teachers you saw on Sunday met. Part of what we’re doing is training new teachers. Jason, the red head, is taking a leap of faith to be a teacher. Public teaching is fairly new to him and how to prepare Bible lessons is a journey near it’s beginning for him also. Tonight we talked about exegesis vs. eisegesis and the need to let the text be the teacher. To read “out of” and not “into” So, thanks for noticing. And I will take your advice on watching for the Holy Spirit. And – teachers are not exempt!

  8. John – First of all. You will never get better if you keep relating everything to food. I thought we had come so far. This is a relapse of epic proportions. Fight the urge. Breathe Deep! Resist! I believe in you, but you must believe in yourself. Ok, a preacher roll – focus John – is when a preacher is in the zone (not the kitchen). He’s on fire. (No, you can’t eat him.) He is unleashed from the pulpit – the words are flying (Flying? Bird?No John, not like the dead bird at Thanksgiving. John? Come back!) the words are as smooth as butter (oops!) The passion the preacher is experiencing or trying to communicate stirs the hearts (not the soup) of the listeners. It’s the BAM! BAM! BAM! – focus-of a great sermon. It arouses the spiritual appetite – focus -of the believer to want to read that verse or do that, “Right Now!” Terry is very good at doing this when he’s in the zone. He even invents words. And they make sense. It’s sweet (not sweets) John. It’s also highly entertaining. Maybe you should try a preacher roll some Sunday. If you can handle it.

  9. LOLOL Craig…well.. I don’t know if I’m up to it or not … I’m preaching at Dusty’s church this Sunday … so I’ll get him to judge whether or not there were any rolls served hot and fresh from the pulpit.

  10. CRAIG! You are a bloggin’ maniac! Feels like Christmas over here… Every blog post is another gift to be unwrapped! It’s just plain fun that you are spreadin’ the love on your blog. The time we spent in Tulsa was a teaser – evident that we could’ve chatted for hours. So I’m diggin’ on your blog, baby! Puh-lease tell your lovely Amy hello from me… perhaps she can submit a guest blog entry here sometime?!

Oh, and did somebody say cinnamon rolls? mmmmmmmmm

John and I are kindred spirits as well! Us Mississippi folks gotta stick together! :-)

    Blog on brother!

  11. Craig left out one important caution about preacher rolls:

Be sure not to spit on your listeners when you go into a preacher roll. Especially the worship leaders or teenagers sitting on the front row. That is not the same as buttering the roll – totally different. Those spat upon will totally lose focus (perhaps is a giggling fit) and your roll will go flat.

    Consider yourself warned.

Craig, John and Brenda, thanks for your kind comments. It doesn’t take much “worship leading” with worshippers like you.

  12. Love the comments here. JD – how about a Craig Hicks interview sometime?

  13. Hi Angie. Christmas.I like. You I like. Better

Shane. That’s a good point. And a funny one too. Somehow I think we share the same sense of humor. Most call it weird. I think it’s funny. I like the way you think. Kindred spirits.

John. DO NOT try a preacher roll in Dusty’s church. You are far from ready. You’re just not in any kind of shape for it. On the other hand, if you do try I’m sure it will be good for the lunch business after services.

Alas, I have poured my heart into some of my posts like Jesus+Coward etc. Hours thinking, writing and re-writing. All for naught. No reaction. No comments. Then an offhand remark about preacher rolls and Shazam! the people speak. I guess it means I’m in the right business. Making Big Macs. You should try our new iced coffee. It’s Mclicious.

  14. Craig, welcome to the mystery of blogging. I have had the same experience. The largest number of hits I ever got to one post was when I wrote a dumb article about celebrities who have larger than average craniums.

By the way, I’m really excited to see that Rex is blogging.

JD, roll all you want! If what I’ve said so far hasn’t gotten me fired – then a little holy rollin’ from you won’t either. But if it does, do you have any job openings in Pascagoula?

  15. We’ll find something for you Dusty!

BTW, is it my imagination or does TERRY RUSH use the term ‘CINNIMON ROLL’ in his post today? Is he reading this? Was that on purpose? Or is that a sign for me to go to the bakery?

how do you even spell cinnemon cinemon cinnemmon SINamon!
